(AP) — Attorney General Letitia James called on New York’s top prosecutors on Friday to release their communications with the office of the special counsel investigating President Donald Trump and demanded a public process for the redaction of documents. James, who oversees the state’s four special prosecutors, sent letters to all four district attorneys in New York urging them to release their communications with the office of special counsel Robert Mueller, saying they have a duty to comply with a legal request from the attorney general. She said the attorney general had also demanded the prosecutors do so by Sept. 3, the deadline set by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for releasing the names of those who had been interviewed by Mueller’s team of investigators. “It is critically important that the public has an accurate and complete understanding of the process that led to the issuance of the Special Counsel’s final report on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, as well as the underlying facts that support the Special Counsel’s findings,” James said in a letter to the district attorneys. “Release of that information is in the best interest of all New Yorkers, and should be conducted in a transparent, open and public process,” she said. The attorney general’s four top prosecutors include Kings County District Attorney Charles Hynes, who is running for a second term in November and has been a frequent critic of Trump; Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas, who is running for attorney general; Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark, who is running for mayor; and Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr., who is not seeking re-election. The Manhattan district attorney’s office has been slammed for only recently releasing some of the more than 400 pages of documents it had collected as part of the investigation of Trump. The New York Times reported that there were at least 34 interviews with current or former White House officials, though there was no indication the Manhattan district attorney’s office had sought to obtain records or other documents to support those interviews. Mueller completed his investigation in be359ba680
